How to Create Custom Name Tags & Silhouette Prints for 3D Printing

Turn Text and Images into 3D Prints — No Design Skills Needed!

Want to 3D print your name or a custom silhouette? It's easier than you think! Follow these simple steps and you'll have a print-ready STL file in no time.

Step 1: Find an SVG Converter Online

There are plenty of free SVG generators available online — just search for "text to SVG" or "image to SVG converter". These tools let you convert both text and images into SVG files, which is the format we need for 3D printing.

Step 2: Create Your Text SVG

Once you've found a converter you like:

  • Choose a font from the available options, or upload your own custom font
  • Type your name (or any text you'd like to print)
  • Hit the Go button to generate your SVG
  • Download the file to your computer

Step 3: Create Your Image SVG

Repeat the process for an image:

  • Upload your chosen image to the converter
  • For best results, use a silhouette-style image — black on a white background works perfectly
  • Generate and download the SVG file

Tip: Simple, high-contrast images convert much more cleanly than detailed or colourful photos.

Step 4: Import into Tinkercad

Now the fun part!

  • Open Tinkercad and start a new design
  • Import your SVG file
  • Once it loads, click on the shape to select it
  • In the side settings panel, find the Steps slider and drag it all the way up to 24 — this smooths out the curves and gives you a much cleaner result

Step 5: Export as STL

  • When you're happy with your design, click Export
  • Choose STL as the file format
  • Save it to your computer — and you're done!

Your file is now ready to slice and print. Happy printing! 🎉
